Earlier this month, Cord Cutters News surveyed over 2,000 of our readers about how they cut the cord. From the survey, Roku is the clear leader in the world of cord cutting and is almost twice as popular as its next competitor, the Amazon Fire TV.
In our survey, we asked our readers to list all the devices they use to stream their content. (Adding the numbers up won’t add up to 100%, as many people use multiple types of devices.) According to our readers, 71.6% use a Roku, and 36.7% use a Fire TV.
In 3rd place were all versions of smart TVs, with 33.2% of the market. In 4th place were Laptops and PCs at 28.1%. In 5th place was the Apple TV with 20.2% of the market, and in 6th place was all versions of the Chromecast.
What is interesting here is Roku’s dominance of Cord Cutting has continued to grow since our 2019 survey, when Roku controlled about 68% of the market. Amazon’s market share with cord cutters has fallen slightly from its 38.3% market share in 2019.
Maybe the biggest surprise was the growth the Apple TV has seen. In 2019, Apple had just a 16.9% market share with cord cutters. It seems the updated Apple TV remote has addressed one of the main issues that kept cord cutters from buying Apple’s streaming player.
The biggest loser in all of this was gaming systems, as only 5.9% of cord cutters use a gaming system to stream their favorite shows. This is down from 10.5% in 2019.
Roku clearly dominates the world of cord cutting, but many Roku owners also use other devices. Saving money by using what you have seems to be more important than having all the devices be the same.
The big question now is, how will the move to a smart TV-focused world change Roku’s dominance? Roku has repeatedly talked about how Roku TVs are now their main focus. Roku is already the #1 smart TV OS sold in the United States. It is very possible that as more Americans upgrade their TVs, Roku will continue to grow its dominance over streaming, but the war is far from over, and anything could happen at this point.
