What is Vudu?
Vudu has been around for quite some time. But its popularity really grew when Walmart bought the on-demand streaming service in 2010. Now, it offers a huge library of movies and TV shows to rent, buy, and stream for a small cost. And in some cases, for free.
Vudu comes with a whole host of advantages. Movies are available on the platform the very same day they’re released on DVD. Plus, for a small fee, you can upload old DVDs or Blu-ray discs to create a digital copy that can be watched anywhere at any time. (It’s worth noting you can usually redeem digital copies of new discs for free via the platform. Discs that are bought at Walmart can also be viewed digitally for free.)
As well as bringing you almost every movie and TV show under the sun, Vudu has also branched out into the originals market. A reboot of ’80s classic Mr. Mom is currently on offer. So is kids’ sci-fi title Adventure Force 5. Other names in production include Friends in Strange Places, a travel/comedy show produced by Queen Latifah, and Legacy, a docuseries centered on the offspring of pro athletes.
With a range of genres and prices to suit all budgets, the service also offers a solid bunch of features.
Vudu plans and pricing
Vudu doesn’t have subscription plans, but it does have two options: free content and pay-per-view. Naturally, you’ll have to pay to access the most up-to-date titles. The paid option also allows you to watch movies and shows in higher resolution.
There’s no set price for rentals and full purchases as Vudu routinely drops fees for limited amounts of time. (It also tends to offer free movie credits to first-time users.)
Titles usually cost between $4.99 and $24.99 to buy, and between $.99 and $5.99 to rent. Some TV show seasons can be more expensive, with the priciest costing around $40.

- Apple TV

What to watch on Vudu
From family films and terrifying horrors to bewitching thrillers and emotional dramas, Vudu has it all. It goes without saying that the service’s free titles aren’t the most recent hits. But almost every new release you can imagine is available to rent or buy.
The main menu is split into three sections:
- Free content
Some devices also give you special Deals and Collection tabs, so you can quickly take advantage of discounts and find Vudu movies grouped together in themes like Still in Theaters.
New releases currently available to rent or buy include several recent Oscar nominees and winners, including Parasite, Joker, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Little Women, and 1917. There are also plenty of James Bond films to keep 007 fans busy, as well as endless child-friendly choices like Frozen 2 and Hook.
Variety also exists in the Vudu TV show category. Crime fans can watch the entirety of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and Homeland, while comedy enthusiasts can laugh their heads off to the likes of Modern Family, Seinfeld, and 30 Rock. And if you like a bit of both, why not see what all the Killing Eve hype’s about?
Although you’ll have to pay for all of the above, Vudu has hundreds of free series and thousands of free movies. There are classics like When Harry Met Sally and The Matrix, along with Batman titles and biopics like Ali. Unfortunately, every free title comes with ads.
If you opt to rent a movie, know that you have 30 days to watch it. But once you’ve started watching, you’ll only have 24 hours to finish the film. Some titles also charge more to watch in HD or 4K Ultra HD.
Up to eight people can log on to one Vudu account, but the service only provides three simultaneous streams. There doesn’t appear to be a storage limit, although it’s unlikely you’ll top it considering titles only remain in your Vudu library for a set amount of time.
Vudu offers an impressive set of parental controls. Family Play, introduced in 2019, allows parents to skip or mute age-inappropriate scenes that may include activities like swearing or violence. Plus, there are ratings and reviews written with parents in mind, making it easy to decide whether a specific show or movie is appropriate for young viewers.
The final cut
Having to make individual purchases every time you fancy watching something new is an unusual prospect in the age of Netflix and Amazon Prime. But Vudu’s free library is what many flock to the service for. And when you fancy kicking back to a recent release, the option’s always there.
