What It Means to Be Parents

Our Family at Hilton Head Island

Parenting has been our greatest and most challenging adventure as a couple. For us, we have the added complexity of co-parenting with Drew's biological father, but with a lot of hard work and communication, we make it work quite well! We co-host Drew's birthday parties with his father and we typically all sit together at Drew's school or sporting events. Our goal is to ensure that Drew is well adjusted and knows all his parents and grandparents are committed to him.

To us, being a parent means having a relationship rooted in unconditional love, expecting the unexpected, and adjusting to the changing needs of children as they grow and mature. We want to lead our children by example and help shape Drew and his brother or sister into people that embody empathy and understand the importance of charity and work ethic. We are both so very lucky to have amazing parents that were our biggest cheerleaders, and we hope that one day our children grow up and realize that we were and will always be their biggest cheerleaders.

Our Leisure Time

Family Bike Ride

We love the life we have built, and we enjoy being together. We are lucky to have jobs that allow us to work from home most of the time. Because we have flexible work schedules, we can be involved in Drew's extracurricular activities. Every year, Jennifer has been the homeroom parent for Drew's class and she enjoys planning class parties and chaperoning school field trips.

Our family is always happy and energized when we are outside. We enjoy running, biking, skiing, and swimming. We can often be found shooting basketball with Drew, walking our sweet, but wild, Goldendoodle, Holly, or making a tasty mess roasting s'mores over our firepit. One of our favorite weekend activities is riding bikes on the miles of greenways in our area. When Drew gets a little tired, we motivate him by promising a detour to grab a smoothie at our favorite smoothie shop.

Every evening, we try to spend some quality time together, and some nights we have more time than others. We watch movies, play games, or build Legos. Some of our game night favorites are MarioKart and Jenga. Since Drew was a toddler, he and Jennifer have read a nightly devotion or Bible story.

We are always excited to plan our travel adventures, and we cherish the special time with our family, away from chores and work. Some of our favorite places to visit are Disney World, Hilton Head Island, Washington DC, and New York City.

Our Family Traditions

Proud of Our Gingerbread Masterpiece

We have many family traditions that Jennifer started with Drew as a toddler.

We always carve pumpkins on Halloween, and most years we have a family costume theme. One year we were Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach, and last year we dressed up as Star Wars villains. Drew was Darth Vader!

Our favorite holiday is Christmas! Jennifer and Drew have made gingerbread houses since he was a toddler. Last year we finally learned the secret of hot gluing the house together, then decorating. It might be cheating but is much less stressful!

Nana (Jennifer's mom) and Drew always make Christmas cookies, and Papa (Jennifer's dad) typically eats more than his share! Our Elf, U-too-tee, was named by Drew when he was young. He still visits every year and delivers a Lego Advent Calendar on December 1. When we welcome a new child into our home, he or she will have an Elf to name too!

Because we want Drew to understand the meaning of Christmas and importance of charity, each year we take Drew shopping to pick out toys to donate to local charities.

Each year we take several vacations, and usually one of those vacations includes Disney World. When Drew was younger, he couldn't wait to go to a character breakfast to see Pluto, and as he has gotten older, he still loves the character breakfasts, but now we must ride Space Mountain a couple times. We can't wait to see what our new child's favorite Disney character is!

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We live in a medium-sized city in east Tennessee and our area has so much to offer. We have a zoo, children's museum, nature center, and miles of greenways. In the warmer months, we go to the downtown farmer's market on Saturday and let Drew pick out some of his favorite fruits and veggies. Every year, our city has a Christmas tree lighting with fireworks, and during the holiday season, we have an outdoor ice-skating rink downtown. We also participate in the annual Elf on the Shelf downtown scavenger hunt. It is so fun to go into the stores and restaurants to find the hidden elves. Last year we found them all!

We Found All the Elves!

Our neighborhood is simply the best, and is partially situated on a lake, about ten minutes from downtown. Our home is a three-bedroom house with an open living area and a large bonus room. We also have a fenced in back yard, enclosed back porch, and swimming pool – a perfect place for parties and play dates.

We are lucky because many of our neighbors have become our closest friends. We travel together, and celebrate birthdays, and other special occasions. Our neighborhood has children ranging from toddlers to teenagers. We love that Drew has friends just a bike ride down the street!

Our Extended Families

Disney With Jennifer's Parents

We consider it such a blessing to have most of our extended family living within a few miles of us. Jennifer's parents used to live in another area of the state but relocated to our city before Drew was born so they could be involved in his daily life and help us out when needed. Because of Jennifer's parent's helping hand, Drew only went to daycare part time, and now they pick Drew up after school. They are thrilled about the idea of having another grandbaby to spoil!

Halloween With Scott's Family

Scott's mother and grandmother live less than five minutes from us, and Scott's uncle and aunt live on our street. Scott's aunt and uncle have a swimming pool, and often have cookouts and other gatherings for family fun. Scott's brother, sister-in-law, and niece also live less than ten minutes from us. Drew enjoys getting together with them to swim and play video games.

Having close family in town means you always have an amazing support system. Holidays and other special occasions are always filled with fun and laughter!

From Us to You

Hey! We are Scott and Jennifer, and we hope our profile helped you get to know us better, and see how much we value family, love each other, and love our son, Drew. We are very happy that you are learning more about us, but we also know this must be a challenging time as you make decisions for your child. We pray for peace and direction for you during this time.

While we can't imagine exactly what you are going through, we do understand how overwhelming it can be when life doesn't go as planned. About six years ago, we both had some unexpected things in our life happen that caused us each quite a bit of heartache. Scott's wife passed away after a brief battle with cancer and Jennifer went through a divorce.

We have known each other for about ten years, and we luckily realized how much fun we had together in 2016. We got married in 2019, and Drew said our wedding day was the "best day ever!" Given what we both have been through, we feel extremely grateful to have found each other and we treasure our relationship. One of the biggest rules in our house is that we don't go to bed angry with each other. Every day is a blessing, and we want to start each day in the best way possible.

We promise to give your child unconditional love and any opportunities that we can afford. We plan to financially and emotionally support our children's education through college or trade school. Jennifer opened an education account for Drew when he was a baby, and we will do the same for his brother or sister. We encourage Drew to explore new interests and step out of his comfort zone. So far, he has taken karate classes, played all kinds of different sports, and taken piano. Nana plays piano, she taught him how to play! In our family, your child will be able to learn and grow by trying out new activities and sports. In this house, you don't have to be the best at anything, but we encourage best efforts.

We are a blended family; therefore, we know genetics is not the only factor that makes a family. The foundation of our family is based on empathy, forgiveness, security, honesty, and tons of affection. We are committed to having an open adoption with you, and we want you to feel comfortable and secure by knowing that you will be able to see your child grow. We are flexible regarding the level of communication and role that you wish to have. We can send letters, emails, photos, and artwork, and we are open to other contact as well, such as phone calls and visits. We promise to share your story and tell your child about the hard decisions you had to make to ensure that he or she has a life full of opportunity.

Thank you again for taking the time to learn more about our family. We would be thrilled beyond measure if you selected us, but we also want you to make the choice that you believe is best! We wish you strength and comfort as you make your adoption decision.

Much love,

Scott & Jennifer
